On Tuesday, January 11, Machine Gun Kelly got down on one knee and proposed to the iconic Megan Fox with a gorgeous bespoke ring. Unlike the tradition of a singular band for a proposal, MGK gave the glowing actress two engagement rings, each one bearing the couples birthstones.
MGK designed this spectacular ring with jeweller Stephen Webster. The ring itself consists of, in MGK’s words, ‘two metallic bands of thorns that draw together as two halves of the same soul’. The beautiful pear-shaped stones are around 3 carats each, set in diamond pave bands.
The design goes against the traditional solitaire style that most couples go to when proposing, and instead takes its style from the vintage Toi et Moi rings. These rings have been worn by celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Ariana Grande, and Emily Ratajkowski. The style became famous in 1796, when Napoleon Bonaparte proposed to Josephine de Beauharnais with a ring in this design. Originally this style adorned two gemstones of different stones in matching sizes and cuts, but in modern day this has been twisted and experimented with to create more luxurious and contrasting designs.
Jackie Kennedy famously worn in beauty her own Van Cleef & Arpels toi et moi ring, and replaced its surrounding linear baguette diamonds with marquise cut ones for a more luxurious style.
Toi et Moi has the loving meaning of ‘you and me’ in French, adding a whole other level of romance to this style of engagement ring. Osenat, the French Jewellery house, sold Napoleon's gorgeous engagement ring way above the pre-sale price in March 2013. It was estimated to go for a mere $10,000, but sold at $1,000,000 due to its outstanding provenance.
